Introduction to Media & Society for Dutch higher education (March 4th, 2013)

In the March session, we will discuss the forthcoming book publication by Vincent Crone and Rob Leurs, titled Inleiding Media & Maatschappij [Introduction to Media & Society]. Inleiding Media & Maatschappij is the first Dutch-language textbook which will provide an introduction to Media Studies for students in higher education. Please find the abstract below (in Dutch).

Het boek Inleiding Media & Maatschappij wordt de eerste (en enige) Nederlandstalige introductie op de kernvragen van mediastudies, met Nederlandse voorbeelden voor Nederlandse studenten in het hoger onderwijs. Het leert de studenten, aan de hand van actuele voorbeelden, over de culturele, politieke, economische, technologische, institutionele en bestuurlijke rol van media in de samenleving en ondersteunt docenten om hier op een uitdagende manier les over te geven.
Elk hoofdstuk stelt een thema centraal. Een thema wordt uitgelegd aan de hand van voorbeelden, theorieën en casussen. Vanuit inhoudelijk en didactisch oogpunt zal er een verband worden gelegd tussen het thema en de ervaringen en kennis van lezers, door aan te sluiten op het eigen gebruik van media. Het leggen van deze verbanden tussen thema en ervaringen sluit inhoudelijk aan op het idee dat media een onderdeel zijn van de leefwereld van de gebruikers van het boek en draagt bij aan de kennis die belangrijk is in de beroepsgroepen waarvoor zij worden opgeleid. De didactische functie is het verbinden van theorie en praktijksituaties, het voor lezers relevant maken van de behandelde stof en de mogelijkheid vergroten om het besprokene vervolgens te gebruiken in de lesopdrachten.

Reden tot publicatie:
Een Nederlandstalige studieboek waarin de kernvragen van de mediastudies centraal staan is tot nu toe niet verschenen in Nederland. Enkele titels belichten een specifiek medium, zoals televisie [1] of nieuwe [2] en/of sociale media [3] of behandelen beroepsvaardigheden in relatie tot journalistiek [4] en public relations [5] of vooral de discussies rondom media in de samenleving [6]. Een studieboek dat een introductie vormt op het hele veld van mediastudies wordt node gemist.
In Groot-Brittannië is er wel een rijk aanbod aan studieboeken voor studenten die op een vergelijkbaar niveau les krijgen als de Nederlandse hbo-studenten en de eerstejaars aan de universiteit. Aan de hand van actuele Britse voorbeelden worden de kernvragen van de mediastudies op een didactisch aantrekkelijke manier gepresenteerd. Publicaties die als voorbeeld kunnen dienen zijn:
